Bought to help child that was getting behind in reading skills and she has made good progress using these lessons. She said some of the pages are ones she had at school and I like that as this means we are reinforcing skills that she is getting in classroom. She brought her grade up from a C to a B and we are now going for an A. I am not a fan of Common Core, however, that is what is being taught and the Language Arts book is helping her reading skills. I feel it is a good practice book and glad that I bought it.
Good for everyday practice. My daughter struggles with writing assignments so I bought this book. There are assignments on narratives but mostly on personal experiences, which is great in our case as that is the key area of development. But I would love to see some 'summarization' or 'write your opinion' kind of assignments as well. Or at least more of them if I missed out on noticing them. Secondly, the book has similar pattern of assignments so the kids can get used to it rather on figuring it out every time they get back to it. The smaller text with question/answer are rich in both vocabulary and information. There are exercises on grammar, punctuation, but not many on synonyms/antonyms. If I could see an example of the assignments or strategies to attempt the writings that would be very helpful. All in all, it has proved to be a good practice book for my daughter and I am planning to buy for the next grade as well.
I have used the "...4Today" series for years as homework,practice,review, and assessment. The Math4Today is especially good. This particular product uses the same stories and activities as the previous publications. It looks like what they have done is to combine many of the previous Write4Today and Read4Today activities in this one book and changed the title to "Common Core Languge Arts 4 Today." There is not that much new in this current publication. So, if you have the older versions of Read4Today and Write4today, you really don't need this "new" product. That said, this is a very good supplemental/practice book. I have found them all to be very useful for homework, review, and mini assessments.
I am a 4th/5th Grade teacher, and I love these workbooks. We use them in school for morning/bell work, homework, and reinforcement of concepts. The way the stories are broken down into passages is especially helpful to students who struggle with reading comprehension throughout long passages, and I see a marked improvement in my students after they work consistently with this workbook.
Would not recommend to homeschool users. Difficult to work with through no fault of the publisher but there are many better alternatives. My recommendation is dump common core altogether until the later grades (middle school and up at the earliest).
My tutoring service uses these as a homework assignment. We use the assesment page as a warm up and evaluation and we use the daily activities for daily homework. Takes students about 3 to 5 minutes to complete a daily task dpending on their ability to understand the question. Parents rarely need to help.
The quizzes for each week do not align with the practice students would be doing leading up to that assessment. Very disappointed by that.
I like the layout of these books. They are broken down to an entire 4 day week on one page. 4 short passages with 4 questions and a 1 page assessment test for the 5th day. I hope these are the types of questions on the new standardized test as the current FCAT test is worded in odd ways which is difficult for children whose brains are not developed yet, to understand. It will be good as extra work after school as it's short and to the point.
