About 100 small pages, simple sentence structure, and big type, this book is written for the middle school reader. The topic and story isn't easy to present in a manner that is accurate without becoming upsetting for a young reader, but I think Lola Rein Kaufman does so quite admirably. With her first person account and enough background history to provide context, this is an excellent way to introduce young readers to one of the darkest periods of recent history. If you buy this book for your children to read, I suggest you read it first and then plan to discuss it with your children after they have read it.

When I ordered this I did not realize it was a Scholastic book for children. It is well written and a very good account of the horrors one young girl experienced but not so that it would be too upsetting for an older child to read. There is a good list of reference material at the end. It is a very short book and an easy read. I'd recommend it for older school age children.

About the Author
Dr. Anthony E. Schwaller has been working in the field of automotive technology and teaching about technology for 35 years. During his teaching career he received the "Distinguished Technology Educator Award" in 1990, the "Special Recognition Award" from ITEA in 1995, and was selected as the Technology Teacher Educator of the Year" in 1997 fro the Council for Technology Teacher Education. He also received the "Outstanding Research Award" in 2003 for his research on Modular Technology in the classroom. During his teaching career, he as worked for Allis Chalmers, General Motors, Eastern Illinois University, and St. Cloud State University where he is now professor and department head. He has written over 50 articles in professional journals, written ten textbook in the automotive technology and related fields, and has given more than 50 presentations on topics in the fields of automotive, transportation, energy technology, and instructional strategies.

As a Talpiot graduate (Class IX) I was extremely impressed with the breadth and depth of research concerning the Talpiot program as covered by the author in this book. I can personally attest to the accuracy of many of the events outlined in the book having lived through them and having shaped others.Talpiot is one of the crown achievements of the IDF. In a way it is a typical Israeli story: define an outrageous goal and then over deliver on it by a mile.Yes, life during the program was hard - My class (Talpiot IX) displayed the following waterfall: 8,000 applicants (all come from the top of their high school) -> 29 candidates -> 19 graduates after 3 years of the toughest academic studies and a most grueling military training.This by far was a defining period in my life, but more importantly a defining initiative for the IDF.The book is such a great read for anyone who is interesting in learning more about a milestone chapter in the history of modern Israel.

i wish we could adopt the open mind teaching and educating in our school system. it's true that in that project they choose highly talented kids. but i'm sure some of it can be adopted to the general population. just need the devotion. where ever it exists.

This is a book for musicians who are passionate about their craft - so passionate that they want to know where it comes from, how it works, and what its possibilities are. This volume is not a casual read, but if you want to thoroughly understand the melodic and harmonic function of scales and modes, Brent and Barkley will take you on a fascinating journey.

Modalogy begins, well, at the very beginning, with a look at some basic laws of physics involving intervals and the overtone series. Through a step-by-step process, the authors go on to trace the evolution of the pentatonic scale, major scale, modes, and ultimately all of the scales commonly employed by jazz musicians.

Throughout the discussion, they make it clear that all scales (yes, even symmetrical scales - and there are more than you think!) are formed as logical extensions of the basic major scale modes, which themselves are simply collections of consonant fourths derived from the overtone series.

The advantage to examining a scale in terms of its derivation and component parts is that you gain a basic understanding of its inherent characteristics and why it behaves the way it does. The authors elaborate on this as they discuss the cadences and progressions of the various modes one-by-one. We may know from experience that bII-i cadences are effective in Phrygian modes, while bVII-i cadences work well in Aeolian modes, but few of us have explored the reasons why.

The section on The Chromatic Modes is challenging, but also fascinating and worth delving into. The only 'criticism' I could conjure up was, "Well, I don't think of it that way, but I wonder what other possibilities these concepts might open up for me?"

This book has been carefully thought out, and explores musical relationships that many of us never dreamed were possible. Few individuals, including musicians, take the time to discover or appreciate the innate mathematical beauty of how music is put together. "Unified field theory" is an appropriate subtitle for this volume. It's just uncanny how the surface complexity of music reduces to utter simplicity and sheer logic.

Although some will read the volume cover-to-cover (not at one sitting!), others will find it more suited as a reference work. The copious appendices cover a broad array of topics with clear tables and charts.

If your approach to music theory is, "I know what works, but I want to know why and what else I might explore," then this is the book for you.
